US President Donald Trump said in an interview with Axios that the United States is approaching a critical juncture regarding the war with Iran, amid discussion of the possibility of resuming large-scale military strikes aimed at ending the conflict.
Trump explained that he wants to hear directly from his allies in the region before making a decision on next steps, during an anticipated meeting with leaders of six Gulf states on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York next week.
According to Axios, Washington had postponed the resumption of major military operations in August after Saudi Arabia and Qatar expressed concerns that Iran would respond by targeting energy facilities in Saudi Arabia.
At the same time, the Trump administration maintained the level of US forces in the Middle East until the end of the year, with the aim of maintaining readiness in the event of a return to large-scale combat operations.
