Gallant reveals pre-October 7 warning that was misunderstood

Former Israeli war minister Yoav Gallant discloses details of a security warning conveyed from Hamas via Shin Bet about a "earthquake in the prisons," saying it was misinterpreted in the context of Elizabeth Tsurkov's case before the October 7 attack.

Former Israeli war minister Yoav Gallant has revealed details of a security warning that preceded the October 7 events, indicating that a message conveyed from Hamas via the Shin Bet spoke of Yahya Sinwar causing an "earthquake in the prisons."

Speaking to Israeli Army Radio, Gallant said the assessment reached at the time by the Shin Bet and Military Intelligence was that the content of the message was related to the kidnapping of settler Elizabeth Tsurkov in Iraq.

According to Gallant, the warning was interpreted in the context of the Tsurkov case, instead of being linked to the possibility of Sinwar carrying out a move related to the prisons or a broader operation, before the October 7 attack.

Gallant's remarks shed light on the nature of intelligence assessments that preceded the October 7 events, and on whether information and warnings reached the security agencies at the time, and how they were interpreted and handled.
