Israel Bars Central Elections Committee from Gaza and Jerusalem

A Palestinian official says Israel's government is refusing to allow the Central Elections Committee access to the Gaza Strip and Jerusalem, as preparations continue for legislative polls scheduled for November 28.

A responsible Palestinian source said the occupation government is refusing to allow the Central Elections Committee to reach the Gaza Strip and Jerusalem, at a time when preparations continue for the Palestinian legislative elections scheduled for November 28.

The source added that the Israeli refusal comes despite regional and international efforts aimed at ensuring the inclusiveness of the electoral process and enabling Palestinians in various areas to take part in it.

The Central Elections Committee had warned in recent weeks about the challenges facing the holding of elections in Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip amid Israeli restrictions, stressing the importance of enabling its teams to reach various areas to ensure voter participation and the integrity of the electoral process.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas issued a presidential decree on July 9 setting November 28, 2026 as the date for holding the legislative elections, and called on Palestinians in Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip to participate in them.

According to the Central Elections Committee, about 2.97 million Palestinians are eligible to vote in the upcoming elections, including about 1.24 million in the Gaza Strip, 1.59 million in the West Bank, in addition to about 140,000 holders of Jerusalem identity cards.
